Prometheus: is it ready for Network Monitoring?

Many common network monitoring tools suffer from the performance limitations of their on-disk storage format, and do not scale well to large networks. Prometheus is a highly efficient time series storage engine, but not specifically designed for network management. This talk outlines the architecture of Prometheus, its benefits, and some of its limitations if you decide to deploy it for network monitoring.

RouteViews update

RouteViews was initiated in 1995 at the University of Oregon to allow network operators see what their routing tables looked like from an external perspective. Over the years since, this community project has set up collectors in strategic locations around the world, allowing network operators a rich view of their routing announcements, and researchers a valuable resource for tracking the growth and variations in the global Internet infrastructure. This presentation introduces the new team behind RouteViews, and shares the new latest developments in the project, now operated on behalf of the global Internet community by the Network Startup Resource Center (NSRC). Some of the developments are a new Peering Policy, How to use the RouteViews system as a network operator and what are we working on for the future.

Space-based internet for resilient infrastructure: a hybrid approach for Nigeria’s digital future

Nigeria is undergoing a rapid digital transformation, but challenges of limited infrastructure, climate risks, and urban-rural inequality persist. Fiber optic expansion has connected urban centers, yet vast rural communities remain unserved or underserved. At the same time, terrestrial infrastructure remains vulnerable to disruptions such as fiber cuts, flooding, or security threats. This paper proposes a hybrid network model that integrates terrestrial fiber with space-based internet, primarily through low earth orbit (LEO) satellites, to enhance resilience, inclusivity, and sustainability. We present use cases across education, health, agriculture, and national security, discuss regulatory and policy considerations, and outline a roadmap for Nigeria’s adoption between 2025 and 2030. By bridging technology, policy, and academia, Nigeria can position itself as a continental leader in digital resilience.

Strengthening Technology and Infrastructure for a Resilient Digital Future

Technology and infrastructure remain the backbone of a sustainable digital future. As connectivity demands increase, the deployment of robust infrastructure—ranging from fiber optic networks to resilient backbone systems—becomes imperative. This paper examines the role of infrastructure in enabling reliable internet access, the importance of IPv6 adoption, and strategies for building resilient networks that align with the theme “Building Our Digital Future: Bridging Technology, Policy, and Academia.”

Connecting the Next Generation: African IXPs as Catalysts for Digital Native Communities and Content Delivery Ecosystems

This explores the pivotal role of African Internet Exchange Points (IXPs) in realising the 80/20 Initiative accessing 80% of Internet traffic locally. Despite significant growth in fibre infrastructure, uneven distribution and intra-African traffic inefficiencies persist. IXPs serve as vital catalysts by delivering reduced latency, cost savings, and improved network resilience. Their capacity to foster thriving digital native communities and content delivery ecosystems relies on critical enablers, including market reform, long-distance connectivity, pro-content regulations, and liberal membership policies to substantially increase localised traffic exchange.

Panel Discussion - The Digital Security Corner: Managing AI Advances While Staying Compliant

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming cybersecurity by enhancing threat detection, automating incident response, and strengthening overall digital resilience. However, its rapid adoption also raises concerns around data privacy, regulatory compliance, and ethical governance. The Digital Security Corner: Managing AI Advances While Staying Compliant explores how organizations can leverage the innovative power of AI while adhering to industry standards, legal frameworks, and best practices. The discussion emphasizes the importance of balancing technological agility with responsible oversight, ensuring that innovation in digital security does not outpace compliance obligations.
